EiP Canadian Development Advisor
Advisory Board Member
|
John, who was born in the U.K., has also lived or worked in Jamaica, USA, Australia and Canada where he is now based.
He holds a Ph.D. and an M.Ed. from the University of Toronto, a B.A. (Joint Honours in Philosophy and Psychology) and a Diploma in Theology, both from the University of Wales, Cardiff. (His doctoral dissertation addressed the issue of police and correctional officer sub cultural constraints and how these have the capacity to impair individual, autonomous moral decision-making at work. The dissertation further addressed how ethics education might prepare new officers for dealing with these pressures).
For much of his life John has worked in the justice field. In the U.K., while being Minister for Youth in a large London church, he ran a youth centre for skinheads. In Jamaica, he taught at a High School and coached a soccer team. In Canada, he has worked as a front-line correctional officer, probation and parole officer, and as an institution administrator. For 23 years John then worked as a professor and administrator in the Law and Justice Centre of a Canadian post-secondary institution. His primary interest was in the teaching of ethics. He spent a year in Australia in 1989/1990 helping the New South Wales Department of Corrective Services institute a different way of administering and managing institutions, and he has returned there many times to conduct training. In the U.S., largely through the Center for American and International Law, he has worked in various training capacities in addition to giving keynote addresses.
For the last 20 years John has also been active in consulting and training, primarily, but not exclusively, in the justice field. He has trained extensively in the areas of Hostage Survival Skills and Suicide Prevention, but his primary, and now almost exclusive interest, is ethics.
John is the author of "Reputable Conduct: Ethical Issues in Policing and Corrections" (3rd. edn.), published by Pearson Education (Prentice Hall), and, "Everyday Ethics for Career and Personal Success," by the same publisher.
John has been married to Marilyn for 38 years and they have two sons and a daughter.
