Interpol urged for anti-terror
JAKARTA, April 13 (Xinhua) -- The Asian and Pacific Conference of the International Criminal Police Organization (ICPO) and the 19th Conference of the Regional International Police (Interpol) ended here on Thursday, calling for strengthening cooperation on combating terrorism and urged the regional police to develop counter-terrorism expertise, a press release from the Interpol said.
Some 180 delegates, mainly policemen and security experts, from48 countries attended the meetings and proposed that the Interpol General Secretariat make fighting corruption one of the organization's priority, which would include creating an Interpol Anti-corruption Academy, it said.
The suggestion would be put forward for consideration by the Executive Committee of the next meeting in May.
"Interpol's unique role in policing also means we have unique responsibilities, one of which is to ensure that standards are created and upheld, especially in terms of fighting corruption," said Interpol President Jackie Selebi in the statement.
"I welcome the Asian region's commitment to fighting corruption and am sure that the rest of our member countries will also support us in this important work," he added.
The three-day conference also recommended for enhancing regional and international cooperation in fugitive investigation, encouraging countries which had not yet established specialized structures to fight terrorism to react as soon as possible and expanding access to Interpol's database from national central bureaus to frontline law enforcement, including border checkpoints and airports, said the release.
Asian is harbored by international terrorists, where a series of their major suicide attacks have killed more than 200 people since 2000, most of them in Indonesia, such as Bali bombings in 2002 and 2005, hotel explosion in capital of Jakarta and explosion in front of Australian Embassy in Jakarta in 2004.
Besides, the region is suffering from systematic corruption which has hampered investment.
