Manila police shoot businessma

MANILA, Philippines (UPI) -- Philippine police shot and wounded a businessman in Manila when they fired on his car after mistaking him for a carjacker they had been chasing.

Randolph Clarito was driving home from the stock exchange Wednesday when bullets from automatic weapons slammed into his car, the South China Morning Post reported.

Clarito, senior vice president of pharmaceutical firm NutriPlus, said his windshield and windows were shattered, three tires were blown out and he was bleeding from a head wound.

Police spokesman Samuel Pagdilao described the incident as 'very unfortunate.' He admitted police had mistaken the businessman`s silver Toyota for a similar model they had been chasing earlier in the day, in which carjackers had fled.

An anti-crime group, Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption, said it would help the businessman lodge a case against the police. 'This thing has been happening again and again. It`s high time they pay,' the group`s chairman, Martin Dino, said.

Last November, the police killed three alleged carjackers in a stolen car in what they said was a shootout near the stock exchange. A video later showed the police had done all the shooting.
