US State Dept sees gloomy righ
Washington, Mar 08: A state department report released today said human rights in Pakistan and Bangladesh remained poor last year.
The annual human rights report also noted serious problems in India and Sri Lanka, although those countries were said to have generally respected their citizens' rights.
The report came just days after President George W Bush returned from a trip to India and Pakistan, where he emphasised the importance of the two US allies.
In Pakistan, where Bush praised efforts to fight terrorism, the government had ``serious problems'' with human rights, the report said.
While noting efforts to combat human trafficking, the state department said restrictions remained on Pakistanis' right to change their government, reporters faced harassment, and there were reports of killings, torture and rape.
India's government, the state department said, generally respected human rights, although ``numerous serious problems remained.''
India faced ``endemic'' government and police corruption, and used special anti-terrorism legislation to justify excessive force against insurgents in Kashmir and other areas, the report claimed.
India was also criticised in the report for legal and societal discrimination against women, for forced prostitution and child prostitution, and for killing and aborting baby girls.
Bangladesh's ``government continued to commit numerous serious abuses,'' the state department said, including reports of politically motivated violence and killings, extensive government corruption and violence against women and children.
