Washington, Mar 08: A state department report released today said human rights in Pakistan and Bangladesh remained poor last year.

The annual human rights report also noted serious problems in India and Sri Lanka, although those countries were said to have generally respected their citizens' rights.

Mechanism to detect police-maf

Kerala Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan today said a special counter intelligence wing would start functioning soon under state intelligence department to detect any links between police and mafia.

Replying to a calling attention in the assembly raised by T N Prathapan (Cong) on the necessity to modernise the police force to enahnce its efficiency, Balakrishnan said an internal vigilance department would also be formed to check corruption in police force.

Terming the entire state police as corrupt would only demoralise police force, he said adding only a small section in police have links with criminal elements and corrupt.

Instructions have been given to take stringent action against police personnel who have criminal background, he said.
