Corning police officer fired,
Jason Dininny, a six-year veteran of the Corning Police Department, has been fired and could be facing criminal charges.
Corning City Manager Mark Ryckman said on Monday that Dininny was terminated on Jan. 15 for misconduct.
Ryckman declined to discuss the details of the misconduct charge but said the matter that led to his dismissal has been referred to the Steuben County District Attorney's Office.
Ryckman said this was the first time since he became city manager in 1997 that he has dismissed a police officer.
"He was given his notice last week with the effective date Jan. 15," Ryckman said Monday.
Dininny joined the police department on April 16, 2001. He had served as president of the Corning Police Benevolent Association, the union that represents police officers in negotiations with the city.
Ryckman declined to say whether the alleged misconduct occurred on or off the job.
Dininny has hired attorney John Grant of Nyack, N.Y., to represent him.
"The allegations that Jason Dininny engaged in any misconduct are absolutely false. The misconduct is by the city and the city's representatives," Grant said. "And unfortunately, when all is said and done, the city taxpayers will be the ones who will end up paying for their misconduct."
Grant declined to elaborate further.
While Dininny was president of the Police Benevolent Association, the union endorsed Republican challenger Tom Reed for mayor last year, bypassing incumbent Democrat Frank Coccho.
The termination of Dininny leaves the police department with 21 officers, including Police Chief Salvatore Trentanelli and Kenzie Spaulding, a school resource officer at Corning East High School.
Ryckman said the department's authorized strength is 23, and that the city is actively recruiting to fill the vacancies. He declined to comment on whether the vacancies will cause scheduling problems.
Dininny is also a partner in B&D Partners, a wood pellet business in the town of Howard. He could not be reached for comment at the business and does not have a listed home telephone number.
