Malaysia police to quiz anti-c
Malaysian police said on Thursday they will question the country's anti-corruption chief about allegations concerning his wealth in a case that analysts say could embarrass the government.

Zulkipli Mat Noor, a former senior policeman who heads the Anti-Corruption Agency (ACA), again denied on Thursday the allegations and said he did not want to be emotional over the issue.

"I have the confidence and courage to face the problem because I believe in God and only a person with guilt needs to be afraid," Malaysia's Bernama news agency quoted him as saying.

Top cops engaged in misconduct

The Police Integrity Commission (PIC) has found the respected New South Wales policeman in charge of the high-profile Janine Vaughan and Caroline Byrne murder cases engaged in misconduct.

In a report tabled in NSW Parliament today, the PIC recommends Homicide Squad officer Detective Inspector Paul Jacob be sacked or disciplined for making mistakes in the Vaughan case and lying to the Ombudsman about it.

A second report tabled in Parliament recommends Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione should consider prosecuting another senior officer, Superintendent Adam Purcell, who it found engaged in misconduct in his handling of a separate case.

The PIC says Detective Inspector Jacob failed to properly investigate claims a local policeman, Brad Hosemans, was involved with Ms Vaughan, who disappeared from Bathurst in 2001.

Mr Hosemans was an investigator in the case, despite being a suspect at one stage, before Detective Inspector Jacob took over.

The report also says Detective Inspector Jacob lied to the Ombudsman when questioned about Mr Hosemans' involvement with Ms Vaughan.

During the inquiry, the officer admitted he should have removed Mr Hosemans from the case earlier.

The report does not recommend Detective Inspector Jacob's prosecution.

The senior policeman was also in charge of investigating the 1995 death of model Caroline Byrne at The Gap in Sydney. Gordon Wood has been charged with her murder and will face trial next year.

'Lies about league player'

The other report recommends Superintendent Purcell should be charged for lying to the PIC over his investigation of a sexual assault in the Sydney suburb of Waverley in 2004.

The officer has been on suspension since June this year and was accused of tipping off rugby league player Bryan Fletcher, who was a witness in the case.

The report found Superintendent Purcell lied to the commission when he said he stopped talking to Fletcher when he went on leave in November 2004.

But records obtained by the PIC show he continued calling the rugby player well into the next year.

It also found he failed to pass on details he had received about the assault.

The report does not recommend criminal charges but suggests Superintendent Purcell be prosecuted for misconduct in public office.

It has also called on the State Government to make it an offence for police to release confidential information to the media, which the officer did several times.
