Malaysia police to quiz anti-c

Malaysian police said on Thursday they will question the country's anti-corruption chief about allegations concerning his wealth in a case that analysts say could embarrass the government.

Zulkipli Mat Noor, a former senior policeman who heads the Anti-Corruption Agency (ACA), again denied on Thursday the allegations and said he did not want to be emotional over the issue.

"I have the confidence and courage to face the problem because I believe in God and only a person with guilt needs to be afraid," Malaysia's Bernama news agency quoted him as saying.

Federal police chief Musa Hassan, in comments carried by Bernama, said the police would soon record statements from Zulkipli and other witnesses.

A government minister said Zulkipli would not be asked to quit or be suspended pending the investigations.

"The law in our country says he is innocent until proven guilty," Nazri Abdul Aziz, a minister in the Prime Minister's Department told Bernama. "So, there is no need for us to suspend him from his duties or ask him to step down."

The opposition had earlier this week called for a government probe into the allegations after an independent news Web site, Malaysiakini, revealed that a retired anti-corruption official had quietly reported them to police last July.

The former ACA official, Mohamad Ramli Abdul Manan, had also written to Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi saying Zulkipli had "amassed substantial property and assets through corrupt practices", Malaysiakini reported, quoting from the letter.

Zulkipli owned several businesses and a stable of properties, including six houses in Johor state alone, the letter stated.

Abdullah, returning home on Friday from a visit to Yemen and Syria, has not commented on the case.

He won a strong election mandate in 2004 on a pledge to tackle graft. But despite numerous probes into complaints of official corruption since Abdullah took office, high-profile prosecutions for graft have been rare.
