Nigeria: Ex-IGP Wants Corrupt
THE Inspector - General of Police, Mr. Mike Okiro has directed all Police Commissioners in the federation to ensure that the Force is free of corrupt elements. He has also announced the promotion of 17 men of the Benue State Police Command for exemplary conducts.
Briefing newsmen after undertaking a one day working visit of the Benue State Command, the IG, disclosed that the issue of corruption in the force is like a canker-worm, but he was determined to cleanse the Force of bad eggs so that Nigerians can be proud of their police once again, adding that those who got into the Force with forged papers would have no place to hide because he was determined to flush them out.
"If you complain that your salary is not good enough and that is why you decide to embark on corrupt practices, I think the best option for you is to quit the force because the government is doing its best for the police within the available resources.
Remember that there are millions out there who have nothing to do and hoping to get into the Force to earn a living and also put in there best. I have a team that is going round the country fishing out corrupt men in the Force and if you are caught, you will not be left unpunished", he warned.
He advised men of the command to shun every act that would be inimical to the growth of the Force. He also announced the lifting of the ban on promotion and empowered CPs and AIGs to promote deserving men in the command and zone up to the ranks of Inspectors.
Mr. Okiro who lamented the condition of service of his men announced however that the police has approved 15% salary increase for the Force, and advised that this was done to encourage officers and men to put in their best in the discharge of their duties.
On the welfare of families of officers who die in active service, the IG warned that families of departed colleagues must not be subjected to more torture by throwing them out of the barracks as was the case in the past. He directed that such officer's families should be entitled to 3 months running salary and six months accommodation in the barracks after death of their breadwinners.
