Former Springfield cop gets ye

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - A former Springfield police officer was sentenced to a year and a day in federal prison Tuesday for skimming cash from downtown bars with his politically powerful brother.

Chester Ardolino, 40, was also ordered to pay a $10,000 fine by U.S. District Judge Michael Ponsor. Ardolino pleaded guilty in March to conspiracy and tax evasion charges. His younger brother, Anthony Ardolino - a one-time aide to former Mayor Michael Albano - admitted to the same charges and is scheduled to be sentenced Wednesday.

The extra day tacked on to Ardolino’s yearlong sentence makes him eligible for a so-called "good time" reduction, which could shave about 45 days off his sentence. Sentences of 12 months or less are not subject to those reductions.

Also sentenced Tuesday for his role in the scheme was Matthew Campagnari, who pleaded guilty in April. Campagnari, who will serve 18 months behind bars and pay a $20,000 fine, was in cahoots with the Ardolino brothers to illegally pocket $700,000 from downtown bars, prosecutors said.

The case against the Ardolinos and Campagnari is part of a six-year-old public corruption probe in the state’s third-largest city that has netted more than a dozen convictions for federal prosecutors.
