Mayor and 1500 police fired to
THE mayor of Baquba and 1500 police in Diyala province have been fired in a bid to end corruption in the force and violence in the region north-east of Baghdad.
Ghanim al Qureyshi, the provincial police chief who took over operations when his predecessor was sacked last month, said Mayor Khalid al Senjeri, a Sunni Muslim, was dismissed over suspicions he was collaborating with Sunni insurgent fighters.
Al Qureyshi said the police were fired because they had fled rather than fight when Baquba was attacked by insurgents in November 2006. He added that he wanted to create a ... Read more

Zimbabwe: 3 Cops Face Corrupti
THREE Chivi policemen, who had an insatiable quest to make a quick buck, ended up in trouble after they allegedly connived to set free a suspect charged with assault in return for 20 litres of petrol and $10 million (old currency) which they shared equally among themselves.
Constable Fungai Tembo (29) and sergeants Godfrey Mafukidze (36) and Hakufiwi Hakufiwi (30) all based at Chivi Police Station have since been arraigned before Masvingo Magistrates' Courts facing corruption charges.
However, the three, who were represented by Mr Dumisani Hwacha of Muzenda and Partners, pleaded not guilty to the charges when they appeared before magistrate Ms Chenai Chawatambira yesterday.
They were remanded out of custody on free bail to February 5 this year.
Charges against the trio arose on July 8 2006 when they arrested Shakespear Magomana in Madyangove communal lands for stabbing Mr Simon Nhengo with a knife in the chest following an altercation at a beer drink.
The State alleges that after arresting Magomana, the three took him to police cells at Chivi Police Station where they subsequently detained him.
Later that day, the policemen allegedly hatched a plan and connived to facilitate the suspect's release in return for a bribe.
It is the State's case that Mafukidze allegedly told Magomana that he had the power to determine his fate since he was the acting officer-in-charge at the time. Desperate for his freedom, he allegedly offered the trio $10 million and 20 litres of petrol.
