‘Police Chief Must Quit:’ MDP
After a recent police crackdown which has seen numerous beatings and at least 21 arrests, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has renewed its calls for Police Chief Adam Zahir to resign.
“In light of the most serious police brutality in over a year, the MDP demands the resignation of Police Commissioner Adam Zahir and the immediate reform of the Police Integrity Commission,” says an MDP press release.

Ehindero warns police against
THE Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Sunday Ehindero, has warned officers and men of the force against extra-judicial killings, saying there must be a re-orientation in the service of the nation and protection of lives and property.
Mr. Ehindero gave the warning while inaugurating the Edo State Armed Response Squad at the Government House on Friday in Benin city. The Inspector General said the whole essence of policing was about care and protection with integrity, adding that he was an advocate of a philosophy that “we must have a paradigm shift, discard our para-military ways of doing things and our old and bad practices.”
Besides, Mr. Ehindero called for a partnership between the civil society and the police as “the containment of crime is not only the business of the police,” he said. He appealed to the members of the public to channel their grievances through civilised means if they perceived that the police had done wrong rather than resort to acts of violence.
Ehindero thanked the Edo State governor, Chief Lucky Igbinedion, for the provision of support and logistics for the police, just as he enjoined other states of the federation to emulate what he called the laudable example of Edo State.
Earlier, Governor Igbinedion had stated that the Armed Response Squad, which has 18 patrol vehicles and unspecified number of bullet-proof vests, was equipped with high-tech digital security devices such as radio transmitter, panic buttons, masts, walkie-talkies and monitoring gadgets.
According to Governor Igbinedion, who lauded the state chapter of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) for it contribution to the success of the project, the outfit would commence operation first in Benin City, the state capital, from where it would be extended to other parts of the state.
He explained that the service of the Armed Response Squad was available to members of the public through a subscription system in which a subscriber under attack presses the panic button and a signal is sent to the control base.
