Man paralyzed since 2002 files
Though Daniel Casares has no use of his legs and only limited motion in his arms, he was convicted of striking an officer and resisting arrest in an October 2006 incident on the Southeast Side of Chicago.

Casares denies striking the officer, and says that police ignored him that night when he said repeatedly that he was paralyzed and could not exit his car, then pulled him forcibly from the car and beat him. On Thursday, Casares filed a lawsuit in federal court against the city and several police officers alleging a violation of his constitutional rights.

Casares, 28, was con... Read more

‘Police Chief Must Quit:’ MDP

After a recent police crackdown which has seen numerous beatings and at least 21 arrests, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has renewed its calls for Police Chief Adam Zahir to resign.

“In light of the most serious police brutality in over a year, the MDP demands the resignation of Police Commissioner Adam Zahir and the immediate reform of the Police Integrity Commission,” says an MDP press release.

“There is a limit to how much violence and arrests people can endure, to how much their human dignity can be violated,” added the party Chairman, Mohamed Nasheed (Anni).

MDP estimates thirty people were beaten on the island of Kinbidhoo in Thaa Atolll during protests against suspected corruption by the Island Chief, Thursday. The arrests and beatings coincided with the Police Force’s 74th Anniversary, which was being celebrated in Malé.

“Those injured included ten women and a three year old child. The unprovoked attack by the Star Force riot police left three people unconscious, and protestors hospitalized, some with serious head injuries,” says the party.

“After the police threatened the protestors with arrest, they began to return to their homes. At this point, the police charged the group with batons. The police officer in charge has given information that the instruction to beat the group was issued by Superintendent Abdulla Riyaz,” reports the MDP.

The new wave of police action comes after a breakdown in bilateral negotiations between the government party, the Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) and the MDP. The DRP accused their counterparts of “illegal dissent,” and it appears the government has now chosen to use the police to stamp out opposition.

“In Male’, six people visiting a hospitalized protestor from Kinbidhoo were arrested, and two more outside a local cafe. In Ihavandhoo, islanders protesting against a lack of electricity are facing a deployment of 40 police officers,” the MDP’s release says.

“Without a change in management, there will never be any accountability within the police and they will continue to act with impunity,” said MDP Member of Parliament for Thaa Atoll and lead negotiator Hassan Afeef.

“The Commissioner should step down. We should also reform the Police Integrity Commission so that it can provide real oversight. The Commission has not even met once since its creation in September 2006,” he added.

The Police are boycotting Minivan and will not comment. The government has been unavailable.
