PSC backs down
The Police Service Commission (PSC) and the commissioner of police have backed down on a promotion decision and have confirmed Acting Inspector Nuffield Burnette, a full inspector. Burnette has held the rank of acting inspector for the past three years.
Burnette’s name did not appear on a recent promotions list, which placed some of his juniors in a higher rank than him. Now, that situation has been reversed.
The SUN, in its lead story, Wednesday reported that Burnette and Assistant Superintendent Wendell Robinson, who was also overlooked for promotion, had both threaten... Read more

Dozens of bent cops 'on verge
Dozens of corrupt Victorian police are facing dismissal and criminal proceedings, the Office of Police Integrity (OPI) has confirmed.
The OPI has told Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Christine Nixon it has evidence against officers involved with serious crimes including drug dealing, stealing and associating with criminals, News Limited newspapers have reported.
The OPI would recommend action within six months against another batch of police it has compiled further evidence on, the report said.
Ms Nixon said she enjoyed a close relationship with the OPI and would follow up on its latest recommendations that she take disciplinary action against dozens of police the OPI had investigated.
OPI director George Brouwer on Sunday rejected claims from former Royal Commission chief Donald Stewart that Victoria's police force was riddled with "deep-seated and continuing corruption".
"From my reading of it, I think Mr Stewart's claim is an overstatement," he said.
"Yes, there are some problems in certain areas within Victoria Police, like any force. But if you are talking about wholesale corruption, that is a nonsense."
The officers under a cloud were in addition to several former armed offenders squad detectives expected to be charged within weeks with assault-related offences.
About half the small number of officers it singled out for integrity tests took the bait, Mr Brouwer said.
The Police Association was hampering the implementation of the OPI's anti-corruption measures, Mr Brouwer said, which Police Association secretary Paul Mullett denied.
But Mr Mullett said the union wanted to be consulted on anti-corruption measures to ensure the rights of police officers were not forgotten.
