State police profiling dispute
A veteran trooper has accused a top state police official of manipulating secret intelligence to create the impression that a rival agency was racially profiling Arab and Muslim residents.

The trooper who managed New Jersey's intelligence computer network says state police Lt. Col. Frank Rogers obtained restricted reports to further his "witch hunt" to discredit the state Office of Counter-Terrorism, according to a copy of an internal complaint obtained by The Record.

"The intent of Lt. Col. Rogers was to destroy an organization he felt was in competition with his agen... Read more

Dispel fear of police in the i

The Rev. Clifford Florence

It has been said for a nation, city, state or town to flourish and survive, its people must abide by the rules of civility. So, if the people of Rochester are to be held to that standard, so should the police officers.

However, some officers — not all — exercise poor judgment and lack professionalism in their dealings with people in the inner city. In this day and age, so many situations and problems have occurred that have instilled fear and discomfort in the black community.

However, over the years I have learned that you can't fix other places until you fix your own home, and for the past 22 years, home for me has been Rochester. And in my contact with police officers, I have found that they have forgotten whom they work for and whom they are here to serve.

Their motto says "to serve and protect" — not to beat up the public. When I say "beat up," it does not mean physically all the time, but verbally, by the words they use. The words the police use can be culturally disrespectful to black people. Also hurtful is the mindset that all young black men in the streets who dress in today's latest fashion also sell drugs, carry guns and run reckless. This is not the case.

No longer can I stand by and watch what goes on without saying anything. Some of the officers have painted an ugly picture of our community. No longer can I watch this injustice that is being served to the black community on a silver platter. It's wrong for officers to back one another up, no matter what, out of fear of being called a sellout. Police officers must have the integrity to do what is right if or when they see their co-workers doing wrong.

The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said it best: "You will not know the true character of a man or woman until things go wrong and they have to make hard decisions." That holds true for police officers.

To improve the situation, I urge the Rochester Police Department to provide yearly training for police — no matter their rank — to enable them to better deal with the public.

We as a community can't operate as a finger. We have to drop all egos, put all pride to the side and form a fist that will work together in an assertive and positive way, to strike a mighty blow for change.

Florence is with the Central Church of Christ in Rochester.
