Daughters seek murder probe
THE daughters of murdered couple Terrence and Christine Hodson have demanded a royal commission into Victorian police corruption, with the execution-style killings of their parents still unsolved despite a report of the nation's top corruption-fighting barrister that implicated police.
As Police Chief Commissioner Christine Nixon hosed down claims that corruption was endemic in the force following the convictions of five drug squad detectives, homicide squad officers insisted they were getting closer to the Hodsons' killer.
But the couple's daughter Nicola Komiazyk - who believes police were behind her parents' murder - yesterday declared corruption a "cancer" within the force. "They'll never clean up the corruption," Ms Komiazyk said. "Never ever. They are kidding themselves."
In a report tabled in parliament more than 18 months ago, corruption-fighting barrister Tony Fitzgerald said another senior drug squad officer, former detective sergeant Paul Dale, was the only suspect in the alleged theft of an internal document that was the likely cause of the couple's murder.
The so-called "blue file" containing hundreds of explosive secret documents was allegedly leaked to the underworld, giving details of whom Hodson had informed upon and what he had said. Mr Dale, who has been investigated by homicide detectives during the Hodson investigation, is no longer in the force.
Charges against him for being involved in a burglary committed by one of the disgraced detectives, whose conviction was revealed this week, were dropped for lack of evidence.
The disgraced detective, David Miechel - who had an affair with Terrence Hodson's daughter Mandy - was caught trying to steal $1.3 million worth of drugs with the murdered police informer and is serving a 12-year minimum jail sentence.
Mandy Hodson said yesterday she believed Miechel was corrupt and got what he deserved, but had no animosity towards the former detective.
