Ukrainian court convicts forme
Ukrainian court convicted three former police officers Saturday of killing an investigative journalist nearly eight years ago. The convictions end a high-profile trial that Heorhiy Gongadze's family say has failed to bring the true masterminds to justice.

Mykola Protasov was sentenced to 13 years in jail while Valeriy Kostenko and Oleksandr Popovych each received 12-year sentences.

Gongadze's beheaded body was found in a forest outside Kyiv in November 2000.

Blood boils over police bash p

A PLAY depicting police brutally bashing a bleeding victim has outraged Victoria's police union.

Tragedia Endogonidia opened on Thursday night as part of the Melbourne International Arts Festival, which has received $5.5 million from the State Government.
Several audience members at the CUB Malthouse in South Melbourne were shocked when two actors dressed in locally hired uniforms, which were strikingly similar to standard Victoria Police issue, staged a horrific bashing of a suspect.

The two "policemen" repeatedly assaulted a man with their batons as he writhed on the floor covered in blood.

The play, by Italian theatre company Societas Raffaello Sanzio, opened just weeks after several Victoria Police officers from the axed Armed Offenders Squad were publicly accused of assaulting three suspects at an Office of Police Integrity inquiry.

Police Association secretary Paul Mullet said the play was an insult to Victorian police.

"It appears the uniforms used are strikingly similar to Victoria Police (issue)," Mr Mullet said.

"It is offensive to our members."

Mr Mullet said the company should have sought permission from police to use the costumes.

Festival artistic director Kristy Edmunds defended the production.

"Societas Raffaello Sanzio is an acclaimed Italian theatre company who use costuming to ensure the metaphors of their work are intact," Ms Edmunds said.

"These are costumes and they are actors performing in a work created several years ago that has toured extensively in Europe.

"I am thrilled that the season has been embraced by the people of Melbourne and has completely sold out."

Festival organisers said they were unable to disclose if any funds were poured directly into the Italian play.

Using virtually no dialogue, Tragedia Endogonidia follows the body's ordeals from birth to death.

Its four-night run ends on Sunday.

Melbourne theatre group Snuff Puppets caused a stir with their charity performance of The Twin Towers Show last week.

The show did not run as part of the festival and did not receive a specific government grant.
