Five police officers axed for

JOHANNESBURG – The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) yesterday axed five of their officers and suspended three others for corruption and assault.
“A departmental tribunal aims to make examples of the axed officers to show both the public and fellow officers once and for all that corruption and assault in the department will not be tolerated,” said the JMPD’s Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar.
Charges against the officers resulted from their actions on January 17 during a JMPD operation, Token Days.
The drivers of the taxis pointed out two officers who had accepted the bribe.
The sergeant reported the matter and “a group of corrupt officers turned violent and seriously assaulted the sergeant,” said Supt Minnaar.
