With reference to the article in the information room entitled "Are OPD officers too quick to tase?"dated 7th May 2006, EiP asks, "Should the use of force by police be strictly monitored and audited to the same level  no matter what the degree of force or means used or is the use of non lethal force inevitable in contemporary policing which would therefore only increase the burden on the administrative process?"

I think it is important that the police are accountable for their actions and any use of force is recorded. If a person is arrested the use of force should be recorded by the officer as part of the evidence and if a person is not arrested the officer needs to recod the details in case of complaints and civil action by the other parties involved. I also think it is important to record the levels of force being used in order that we can understand the trends in policing that are being deployed or indeed the public reaction to policing.

Policing is always at the frontline of the interaction between civil society, state and governement. Therefore the interaction and level of violence is in my opinion a clear indicator of social problems. Therefore the level of force being deployed by the police on a minor or major scale is important to understand.
