Cape cops bust for corruption
The Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD) has decided to prosecute two policemen from Kensington Police Station in Cape Town on corruption charges.
ICD spokesperson Steve Mabona said on Wednesday the directorate was given video footage of police officers partying with gang members in May last year.
On the same day, a witness made numerous allegations of corruption against officers at the police station.
After an investigation, the Directorate of Public Prosecutions decided to charge two of the police officers with corruption.
A decision is still awaited for the other four police officers.
The trial of one policeman, Inspector Sydney Simpson, began on Tuesday and will continue until Friday, then resume again from May 22 to 26, at the Cape Town Magistrate's Court.
The date for the second policeman's trial is still to be announced.
Simpson is alleged to have accepted a bribe of about R1500 for submitting a false statement in favour of a suspect in an armed robbery case.
The second policeman allegedly submitted a false statement for the release of two suspects in an armed robbery and attempted murder case.
His alleged lie resulted in failure to arrest another armed robbery suspect, Mabona said.
