The silence and shame of some
By DIANE M. HARDY
The verdicts in the Frank Jude Jr. beating trial did not surprise me. I've had an uneasy feeling that former police officers Andrew Spengler, Daniel Masarik and Jon Bartlett would be found not guilty. Many in the community, however, never imagined this outcome.
Hearing "not guilty" still made me so angry and agitated that I headed to the Milwaukee County Courthouse after the verdicts Friday night.
A small crowd had gathered. The feeling of anger and frustration was palpable.
Some of the chants echoed my feelings, such as "Justice for Jude... Read more

Police Chief, Officers Charged
A Tri-state police chief and two of his officers are facing charges ranging from rape to theft.
The officers are all from the Aberdeen Police Department in Brown County.
The police chief's son seems to be at the crux of the investigation, which has lasted five months.
Aberdeen Mayor Robert Meadows, whose office is just across the hall from the police department, couldn't believe the investigation turned up such significant troubles.
"It really shocked me. I guess I knew we had some problems in the department, but I didn't realize it was this major," said Meadows.
Most charges involve Officer Gary Hafer, Jr., the chief's son.
Hafer, Jr., is charged with gross sexual imposition, rape, burglary, and theft in office.
His father, Gary Hafer, Sr., is now charged with complicity of theft in office and dereliction of duty.
Finally, Officer Clark Gast is charged with complicity to commit gross sexual imposition, failure to report a crime, theft in office and dereliction of duty.
The investigation started after Brown County's prosecutor got complaints about Aberdeen's officers.
"If you're asking me, do we hold them to a higher standard, to a certain extent we do because they understand the law better than a common citizen and we expect integrity, honesty, law abiding officers, if they're enforcing the law, they ought to be obeying it," said Thomas Grennan, Brown County Prosecutor.
No one would go into a lot of detail about exactly what is alleged to have happened, but the indictment indicates that rather than "protecting and serving," Hafer, Jr., engaged in improper sexual conduct with three people, threatening at least one of them.
Now, Aberdeen's mayor says he and the remaining police officers are working to change the image with new paint on cars and a new, respectable looking office.
The police chief and his son are on leave from the department. Clark Gast has resigned.
On Monday, Gast surrendered and has been released. He says he's not guilty.
Gary Haver, Sr., and Jr. have not turned themselves in yet. They'll either do that or face arrest.
