Suit: police beat man to force
There are new allegations of abuse at the hands of a Chicago Police officer.

A lawsuit was filed Wednesday from a Chicago man who claims he was falsely accused of murder and, he says, he was severely beaten in an attempt to force a confession for the crime. Leonard Robinson was later acquitted of first degree murder charges.
Robinson says police punched him, stomped on him and whipped him with a TV antenna during three days of interrogation.

As hard as the Chicago Police Department tries to remake itself for the future, its past keeps coming back to haunt the force. Read more

Top cop investigated over labr

THE commander of the NSW police dog squad is being investigated over an alleged racket in which prize labradors valued at $40,000 were stolen and sold at a profit.

The Daily Telegraph can reveal Chief Inspector Peter Crumblin is being quizzed over the disappearance of at least eight trained sniffer dogs worth $5000 each.
Insp Crumblin has been stood down from the post while the professional standards command - formerly the internal affairs branch - investigates the corruption allegations.

It is alleged Insp Crumblin - a dog squad officer for 25 years - personally bought dogs with police money from the Australian Customs Service and Guide Dogs Victoria.

A few labradors from each litter would be declared unfit for police work, then retained for breeding.

It is believed some of the prize labrador pups were then sold back to government agencies and the ringleaders of the alleged scam pocketed the proceeds.

The alleged racket was run from dog squad headquarters at Menai and at least five of Inspector Crumblin's colleagues have been interviewed in the past three months.
Initial investigations have found no other senior police directly profited from the elaborate scam, but anti-corruption police are investigating the involvement of another person outside the force.

A police source said: "These dogs are not your average pets. They are finely trained animals with an incredible sense of smell, which is essential for bomb and drug operations."

The alleged racket was discovered when former internal affairs officer Julie Middlemiss took command of the dog squad in September.

The records showed that about $40,000 had been spent on labradors that had mysteriously disappeared.

"There is a current investigation into issues at the dog unit but it is inappropriate to comment any further at this stage," a police spokeswoman said.

"The officer is no longer at the dog unit and has taken sick leave."

Police are also investigating the inexplicable disappearance of two trained labradors at Marulan, near Goulburn, early last year.

"Dogs like this do not just run away, they are impeccable dogs. It's never happened before," a source close to the dog squad said.

Investigators have now begun cross-matching police records against registration papers issued by Sutherland Council.

The Daily Telegraph understands the council is working closely with police internal affairs.
