Police ready for 2006 census –

As the National Population Commission (NPC) commences the national head count on Tuesday, the Nigeria Police say they are ready to provide adequate security during the exercise.

Speaking last Friday in an interview with airport correspondents at the Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa, the Inspector General of Police, Mr Sunday Ehindero, who gave the assurance, said in preparation for the census, the police began the sensitization of its men two months ago in readiness for the head count.

Mr Ehindero said the director-general of NPC had spoken and demonstrated the modalities for the exercise to his men in order to get them equipped.

The police boss said he has had dialogue with all the state commissioners of police and held meetings with assistant inspectors-general and deputy inspectors-general of police to streamline the role of the police in the exercise, adding that no nation can exist without knowing its numerical strength.

While acknowledging that there are bad eggs’ among the police, Ehindero said the police high command plans to re-screen all policemen and flush out those with criminal records in order to maintain the integrity of the force.

Mr Ehindero said he was convinced that the screening and recruitment policy in the force has not been prefect, adding that the re-screening exercise will ensure that only policemen with good and clean records were retained.

‘The re-screening exercise will be tough, only the good ones will stay while those with back records will be flushed out”, he said.
