Police and UVF links: who at t
The Police Ombudsman's shocking revelations on collusion between the security forces and loyalist paramilitaries have left one key question unanswered.
Who at the top levels of the police and political establishment knew the extent of the murky links between Special Branch and the UVF?
Nuala O'Loan yesterday confirmed that 40 retired officers, including two chief constables, failed to cooperate with her inquiry into collusion between the police and the UVF in the loyalist north Belfast estate of Mount Vernon in the 1990s.
Her report, published yesterday, revealed that paid infor... Read more

Menezes family reject police c
The family of a Brazilian man shot by police who mistook him for a terrorist have rejected claims senior officers did not know within hours he was innocent.
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Alan Given has supported claims by Metropolitan Police chief Sir Ian Blair that he was unaware a mistake had been made until the next day.
Given said he talked to staff at Sir Ian's private office on the day Jean Charles de Menezes was shot at Stockwell Tube and, as far as he knew, there was never any suggestion a mistake had been made.
Given's backing of his boss comes in the wake of allegations Sir Ian's office misled an inquiry over the aftermath of the shooting, and had in fact known hours later that the shooting was a mistake.
Asad Rehman, spokesman for the family campaign for justice for Mr de Menezes, said they believed the comments had been made as part of a pro-Sir Ian campaign by elements within the police.
"We are very clearly of the opinion there were senior officers on the Friday (the day Mr de Menezes was shot) who were aware Jean Charles was innocent.
"Either Sir Ian Blair is lying about knowing, or he was kept in the dark, and I don't know which is the more damaging to him.
"We hope the investigation will answer these questions."
Mr Rehman said he hoped both the Independent Police Complaints Commission's reports - Stockwell 1 and Stockwell 2 - would be made public by Easter.
He said the family was not concerned in becoming involved in the battle between factions which were pro and anti-Sir Ian; they just wanted to ensure people were held responsible for their actions.
