In the past Chief Constable Merydydd Hughes has been robust over the issue of speeding. He has warned of "anarchy" on the roads, and said he is amazed people disregard the safety limits.
Not as amazed, perhaps, as the anti-speed camera campaigners who were gleeful yesterday when it emerged that Mr Hughes has been accused of driving at 90mph in a 60mph area. N3m bribe scandal rocks police
A Deputy Superintendent of Police[DSP], and one of his surbodinates have been arrested and detained over an alleged N3million bribe which has created cracks among senior and junior officers of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) in Abuja.
The officer (name withheld) and a Sergeant (name also withheld) are cooling their heels in a cell at the FCID in Abuja, where they were attached to the Anti-Pipeline Vandalisation Squad, and served in the same team during which the Sergeant allegedly demanded and recieved the money as bribe from a suspected illegal bunkerer.
Police sources said a crack team of detectives investigating the bribe saga on the orders of the Inspector General of police, IGP Sunday Ehindero, has fingered the Sergeant as the initiator and reciever of the N3million bribe, purportedly for some top officers in the FCID to facilitate the release of a 33,000 litre capacity tanker seized by the police while being used for illegal bunkering activities.
It was further gathered that although the money was allegedly collected since last year from the suspect whose name could not be ascertained at presstime, it was not disbursed to the "appropriate" top officers as claimed by the Sergeant , who is suspected to have diverted the money in league with some other officers.
"After collecting the money, the Sergeant kept sealed lips. But on his arrest, he claimed to have given N.5million to members of his team. He is yet to disclose other officers who shared the money with him.
Perhaps, if he had channeled the money properly, nothing might have been heard of it", said a top police officer who pleaded anonymity.
Although the money was collected ten months ago, hopes for the release of the tanker dimmed progressively, even as the Sergeant reportedly assured the owner that the issue would soon be resolved, until he was recently transfered out of the FCID alongside the DSP who was moved to another state command.
Saturday Sun learnt that the bubble burst few weeks ago, when the owner of the truck summoned courage and petitioned the IGP, who promptly ordered the immediate arrest and detention of the two officers suspected to be principal actors in the bribe saga, while investigation continues.
Besides DCP, Amusa Bello, and a few other officers who assumed duties at the Area 10, Garki district office of the FCID in Abuja, after the deal had been struck and the money collected, the development is said to have caused jitters among most other operatives of the Unit amidst fears that the Sergeant may open a can of worms which could consume several officers.
When contacted for comments, Police Force Public Relations Officer, DCP, Haz Iwendi said he has not been briefed on the issue, but added that "the fact that two officers are already in detention indicates that the IGP's policing with integrity slogan is on course".
