Colombia: Police chief calls corruption, arrests in department 'painful' .

The director of Colombia's National Police has called the recent arrests of 25 policemen for drug trafficking and false entry charges "painful" and "a little embarrasing."

General Oscar Naranjo said in an interview with Radio Caracol on Thursday, "Days like yesterday are painful for this institution, and for me a little embarrassing."

Naranjo pointed out that the initiative to arrest the 17 policemen charged for trafficking cocaine came from within the department: "I have faith in the department [because] there are more good policemen than these delinquents who betrayed our principles."

The director of national police went on to say in an interview with newspaper El Tiempo that fighting internal corruption "will be essential," and that "the department will act with rigor in order to serve justice to those who fail to fulfill their duties."
