Corrupt cops should be arreste

Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Paula Llewellyn has called for a system, in which police officers who are suspected of committing an offence are arrested immediately, to be put in place.

This, however, would be dependent on the evidence of the case and reasonable cause to suspect that a crime has been committed by the offender.

"I would also wish to see a system put in place by the police whereby there is immediate arrest, as a matter of course, of suspected law enforcement offenders with stop orders at the airports if necessary to prevent the potential police off... Read more

Investigation Completed into Corruption in Greece Police Department

GREECE, NY: The head investigator into corruption in the Greece Police Department announced "mission accomplished" Friday afternoon.

Former Deputy State Police Superintendent Joseph Loszynski was hired to look into accusations of wrongdoing in the department.

Loszynski released his final report Friday and said he referred several cases to the DA's office for prosecution. He says District Attorney Mike Green will decide whether to prosecute additional individuals.

Nine members of the department--eight officers and one civilian--have either resigned or face disciplinary procedures.

Allegations of misconduct include: obstructing an investigation, failing to investigate alleged wrongdoing in the department, and abuse of overtime.

The town spent roughly $1 million to investigate corruption in the police department and to implement necessary changes. Town Supervisor John Auberger says residents got their money's worth. Auberger says "you cannot put a price" on the integrity of the police department.

The investigation was prompted by charges against two police officers. Chief Merrit Rahn was charged and convicted with impeding the investigation into one of those incidents and helping to falsify a background check into the hiring of another officer. That officer later faced charges--and was convicted--of giving special treatment to a woman in exchange for sexual favors.

Town Supervisor John Auberger says the police department was fully accredited, so there was no reason to believe there were any major problems. And Loszynski says if there was any evidence implicating Auberger, it would have been forwarded to the DA's office.

As a result of the internal investigation, a number of recommendations have been--or will be--put into place. Those include: creating an internal affairs bureau, establishing a criminal investigation division, tightening controls over criminal evidence, and improving overtime procedures.
