Trooper arrested for DUI was a

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Police say a trooper who was arrested for driving under the influence was also speeding.

Troopers are calling it a personnel matter and cannot release the details, but they say 36-year-old Trooper Derek Loop is still on the job.

Loop was pulled over Sunday at 1:45 a.m. at the intersection of Kobuk Street and Bering Avenue in Soldotna.

The speed limit is 25 mph, but when Loop passed through he was driving fast enough that Soldotna police pulled him over.

"He would've been given the standard battery of field sobriety tests which is horizontal gaze and walk and turn and one leg stand," Sgt. Duane Kant, spokesperson for Soldotna police, said.

Loop's blood alcohol level was .124 which was over the .08 legal limit.

Police found a handgun and a shotgun in his vehicle.

Officers say Loop was cooperative.

Soldotna police tell us Loop was wearing civilian clothing at the time and was not on duty.

He was cited with driving under the influence and two counts of misconduct involving a weapon.

"In the state of Alaska, if you have a weapon in your vehicle when you are intoxicated, that is a crime of misconduct involving weapons," Kant said.

A spokesperson with the troopers declined to tell us what might happen to Loop. They say it's a personnel matter and not public information.

Loop began his career in law enforcement back in August of 2002 when he took a job with the troopers.
