British Transport Police: chie
THE police chief in charge of stop-and-search on Scotland's railways has dismissed attacks on his force as "nonsense", following claims that Asians were being unfairly singled out.

Figures last week revealed that one in seven searches on passengers since July had been on non-white people, who make up only 2% of the population.

Justice secretary Kenny MacAskill attacked the British Transport Police , claiming the disparity showed there was something "far wrong" with how searches were carried out. But Ian ... Read more

Milwaukee Police Chief Ed Flyn

Milwaukee Police Chief Ed Flynn admits having an affair with UWM Professor and freelance reporter Jessica McBride. News of the affair broke in the Journal-Sentinel June 19th, 2009.

In a written statement Chief Flynn responded saying:

"I have done my wife and family a great wrong and i profoundly regret the hurt I have inflicted on them and others affected by my conduct. I accept the personal and public consequences of my private behavior.

This is a personal matter that occurred in my private, off-duty time. I will continue to devote myself to making Milwaukee a safer place.

I hope that the people of this city who so warmly welcomed me can eventually forgive me."

"Police have a responsibility to see that colleagues refrain from misconduct. I know that goes against traditional grains, but misconduct damages us all." This is the ethical tone Milwaukee Police Chief Ed Flynn set for the department in 2008, after being on the job for only a few days.

After the revelation of an extramarital affair in May, Chief Flynn accepts all personal and public consequences of his private behavior.

UW-Milwaukee Professor Mordecai Lee says, "We expect people who are paid on our dime to be a proper public example...This is a professional public servant, a person whose appointed by elected officials and is accountable to elected officials."

The question that follows Chief Flynn's public apology is will it be enough to warrant keeping his job. Flynn's boss the Fire and Police Commission say they're satisfied with the chief's job performance, and he will not face disciplinary action. The commission sees this affair as a matter that does not affect public safety or police operations.

Milwaukee Police Association President John Blacerzak says Flynn's fate rests with the commission and elected officials. Balcerzak expects the commission to use the same yardstick it's used with the Flynn affair when it comes to police officers.

Professor Mordecai Lee says there are several key elements for maintaining confidence and trust in public service. Top of the list is maintaining truthfulness and honesty, and not compromise it for personal gain.
