Police Corruption? Just Blame
Lee Taek-soon, the police commissioner general, brought 340 internal affairs officers together at a gathering and told them, ¡°It broke my heart to see a rise in the number of arrested police officers during a crackdown on gambling arcades last year. OPI orders review of Mullett i

The Office of Police Integrity (OPI) has ordered Victoria's new police chief to review a probe into bullying claims against former police union boss Paul Mullett following claims the government may have interfered in the investigation.

The Age newspaper said the order comes two months after whistleblowers told the OPI the government may have interfered in the probe to gain his backing for the 2006 Victorian election.

At the time, Assistant Commissioner Luke Cornelius said he could not determine any findings from the investigation, ordered by then chief Christine Nixon, but the OPI now says it has evidence from the inquiry that "did not accord" with Mr Cornelius' findings.

The OPI's move comes as Roads Minister Tim Pallas denies he tipped off former assistant commissioner Noel Ashby that Mr Mullett, then Police Association secretary, may be under investigation by anti-corruption authorities.

The OPI has made no finding about whether the Victorian government exerted any pressure on the bullying investigation.
