POLICE have threatened to withdraw protection services from politicians as anger grows within the force over moves to charge Senior-Sergeant Chris Hurley with the manslaughter of Palm Island man Mulrunji.

PIC drops probe into officer's

The Police Integrity Commission (PIC) has refused to say why it has stopped investigating a claim it damaged the reputation of a policeman in southern New South Wales.

In 2005, the PIC presented a report to State Parliament about Operation Whistler, which examined the conduct of several Wagga Wagga officers during a 2003 arrest.

Senior Constable Timothy Briggs complained to the PIC Inspector that the report included material that was damaging to his reputation and integrity. The Inspector upheld the complaint and the report was amended.

But in 2007, Senior Constable Briggs' promotion to Sergeant was terminated because of adverse findings in the report.

The PIC launched Operation Alford to investigate the complaint last April and was expected to report to Parliament when it was finished.

The commission now says that investigation has been discontinued.
