Police chief fired for campaigning on the job
Shepherdsville Police Chief Col. Doug Puckett was fired by Mayor Scott Ellis for campaigning while in uniform and allowing city space and employees to be used for political campaigns, according to the city's investigation filings.
Puckett, who had been police chief since late 2007, was fired March 7 and had been suspended with pay since Jan. 4, days after Ellis took office.
Puckett's attorney, Mark Hall, said Puckett denies the allegations. Puckett supported former Mayor Sherman Tinnell, Ellis’ opponent, but did this in his personal time, Hall said.

UK: BNP accused faces miscondu
A MERSEYSIDE Police officer could face a misconduct panel after it was alleged he was a member of the BNP.
The force has completed its investigation into Wirral-based Steve Bettley, who once worked as the chief constable’s chauffeur, after a membership list for the extreme right-wing party appeared on the internet last month.
He was immediately suspended and it has now been recommended the officer faces a misconduct panel.
A police spokesman said last night: “The matter is now in the hands of Merseyside Police’s solicitors for further consideration. The constable remains suspended.”
Police are banned from joining the party because of the impact it would have on race relations, according to the Association of Chief Police Officers.
The officer is one of almost 500 people from Merseyside and Cheshire whose names were on the list of more than 12,000 BNP members which includes teachers, former and current servicemen and former police officers.
There were also businessmen and numerous people described as “activists” on the list from the region.
Police say Mr Bettley was an interim driver for Chief Constable Bernard Hogan-Howe from April to October, 2006, for a temporary period between the official driver retiring, and his new driver being recruited.
A spokesman added: “Chief Constable Bernard Hogan-Howe has reiterated our position that membership of the British National Party is totally incompatible with the duties and values of Merseyside Police.”
At the time of the internet leak, BNP spokesman Simon Darby insisted it was politically motivated, and said it had “gone from a privacy story to a political one”.
He claimed members were harassed since their details had been made public.
The Merseyside Black Police Association (MBPA) has supported police efforts so far to investigate BNP membership.
In a statement, the organisation added: “MBPA believes that where it can be proven and is satisfied a police officer or police staff member is a member or supportive of the aims and objectives of the British National Party, they should be dismissed from service.”
