Police chief suspended 21 days
Northfield Police Chief Jeffrey Shaw has been temporarily suspended for claiming he had received required police training when he had not, concluding a process that began in early 2008 when a state agency began investigating the chief.

The penalty was part of a settlement that Shaw and his attorney proposed, which the Vermont Criminal Justice Training Council accepted Tuesday as the two parties were headed for a hearing in the case.

The suspension of Shaw's law enforcement authority went into effect Tuesday and will last for 21 days, said Todd Shepard, the chairman of the tra... Read more

Lauderhill police officer migh

Lauderhill City Manager Charles Faranda will decide this week whether to fire a police officer over allegations he was insubordinate and belittled officers with racial and sexist slurs.

Shaun VanBeber, 40, a seven-year officer with the department's traffic unit, has denied the accusations, Internal Affairs records show.

Four officers wrote memos alleging VanBeber's misconduct this year, prompting a two-month inquiry that ended in August.

The inquiry determined VanBeber violated seven conduct and anti-harassment policies. Investigators relied on interviews from at least 17 department members, many of whom corroborated complaints he was insubordinate, hostile and verbally abusive. Several officers said he used derogatory terms, such as "monkey," when referring to black colleagues, records show.

John Puleo, a union representative assisting VanBeber, said the exchanges were "taken out of context" and officers who have said nothing improper happened were not interviewed.

"He's wrongfully accused," said Puleo, of the Florida Fraternal Order of Police. He declined to arrange an interview with VanBeber, who has been on administrative leave with pay since June.

Investigators wrote VanBeber acknowledged to them "he has a foul mouth" but does not use racial or sexist slurs. VanBeber told investigators his co-workers envied his high productivity.

Van Beber's evaluations since 2001 describe him as high-performing. In 2002, he rescued a fleeing suspect from a canal. Commendations cite his leadership, courteousness and safety efforts.

Evaluations also have cited concerns about his self-discipline and "abrasive" approach. He has received two reprimands in the past two years, one resulting from his alleged use of profanity at a store.

VanBeber was dismissed from the West Palm Beach Police Department in June 2001 after being disrespectful to superior officers, cursing at one, according to police documents. In his application with Lauderhill, VanBeber described the incident as isolated.

Based on the latest inquiry's findings, Police Chief Kenneth Pachnek on Oct. 3 recommended to the city manager that VanBeber be fired. Pachnek wrote VanBeber kept up "despicable" behavior despite a previous misconduct reprimand and participation in an emotion-management course.
