Former police chief, car deale
Former Anishinabek Police Service Chief Glen Bannon and Sault Ste. Marie Ford dealer David Worth are among seven individuals and companies charged this week by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police after a four-year corruption investigation, SooToday.com has learned.
Bannon, 53, who served as police chief from the inception of the Anishinabek Police Service in 1994 until 2004, is facing seven criminal code charges of stealing government vehicles, breach of trust and accepting secret commissions.
Worth, 47, is dealer principal of Highland Ford Sales Ltd., 68 Great Northern Road. He's charged with corruptly giving a secret commission and breach of trust.
Documents filed by RCMP investigators at the Sault Ste. Marie Court House accuse Bannon of stealing a 1997 Honda Four Trax 300 all-terrain vehicle, a 1987 Harley Davidson motorcycle, a 2002 Ford Crown Victoria and a 2003 Ford Expedition, all property of the Ontario government.
Barbara Lynn Bannon, 53, who resides with Glenn Bannon at 84 Church Street in Echo Bay, is also charged with breach of trust and accepting a secret commission.
Two numbered Ontario companies are similarly charged:
- 212321 Ontario Ltd. does business as Highland Ford.
- 746424 Ontario Ltd. carries on business as Cargate Investments Inc., based at David Worth's home at 90 Texas Avenue.
Also charged with breach of trust and corruptly giving secret commissions are 71-year-old Rinaldo Darolfi of 75 Lewis Drive in Woodbridge, Ontario and 445159 Ontario Ltd., which does business as D&R Electronics Co. Ltd, 8820 George Bolton Parkway in Bolton, Ontario.
The breach of trust and secret commission offences allegedly occurred between April 4, 1994 and September 7, 2005.
Based in Garden River, the Anishinabek Police Service has detachments in Rocky Bay, Ginoogaming, Heron Bay, Mobert, Garden River, Sagamok, Wahnapitae, Magnetawan, Shawanaga, Wasauksing, Christian Island, Nipissing, Curve Lake, Kettle Point and Dokis.
Before becoming chief of Anishinabek Police Service, Bannon held a policing position in his home community of Fort William First Nation.
He was active with both the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police and the First Nations Chiefs of Police Association.
The 19 charges resulting from the corruption probe were laid by the RCMP without fanfare on Monday of this week.
