NSW needs 3000 extra police
NSW faces soaring crime and the threat of more riots unless 3000 police officers are recruited urgently, a new report has warned.

It also accuses the State Government of using "smoke and mirrors" to hide the truth about inadequate police resources.

The report, obtained by The Daily Telegraph, has found the state's policing level is the nation's second lowest, with only one officer for every 440 people.

The NSW Police Association report also says that level is well below the standard of cities in the United States with similar jurisdictions.

Benguet police get PNP award t

BAGUIO CITY - The Benguet Provincial Police Office has been judged "best provincial police unit" in the country twice in a row, in 2005 and in 2004.

President Arroyo and the Philippine National Police chief, Director Gen. Arturo Lomibao, will present the award to Senior Superintendent Villamor Bumanglag, Benguet PNP director, at the 15th PNP anniversary in Camp Crame on January 30.

Chief Superintendent Leonardo Dionisio, Cordillera police director, will also be present at the anniversary after PRO-CAR was judged, for the second time, as the "best regional police command" in the country.

The Baguio City Police Office and the La Trinidad Municipal Police Station, two of the strongest contenders in their respective categories over the past two years, failed to win an award.

"With all humility, the Benguet police would like to share the award with the entire Cordillera police, especially with the BCPO, La Trinidad police and the Regional Mobile Group because these units did their best," Bumanglag said in a telephone interview.

It was during Bumanglag’s watch as Baguio police director that the office was deemed, for the first time, as the "best city police office" in 2001 and again in 2003 under of Senior Superintendent Francisco Manalo.

Bumanglag and Manalo are members of the Philippine Military Academy Class 1979.

The PNP general headquarters gives annual recognition to police units and policemen for their exemplary performance as protector of the public.

The Benguet police’s success includes a decrease in monthly crime volume and the peaceful settlement of the 100-day labor strike at the Lepanto Mines. Harley Palangchao
