Traffic police staff to sacked

The leadership of the Interior Ministry is to elaborate an order, under which traffic police staff will be reduced by 50 per cent, and the rest of the personnel will undergo a re-appointment test.

These instructions were given by Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin at a meeting of the collegial council of the Interior Ministry (MAI), entitled Combating Corruption in Interior Bodies.

Voronin said that the need to conduct the concerned meeting stemmed from the alarming situation in this institution in terms of corruption, namely in the traffic police subdivisions, the president said. Vladimir Voronin thoroughly described the fraudulent schemes traffic police officers use to collect money from the population by compelling drivers into paying illegal taxes.

The president also revealed concrete cases and names of traffic police officers from different Moldovan districts, documents of the specialized structures, which prove the corruption of this subdivision's staff. One of the examples refers to the Commissariat of Basarabeasca, where police were levying taxes from different categories of transporters which amounted to 500 lei.

Voronin also referred to cases when police do not conclude or forge official reports, or other documents related to traffic perpetrators. For instance, policemen shun compiling official reports provided that drivers pay 50 per cent of the legal fine, inflicting thus significant financial damages to the state.

Corruption is also present when hiring and testing the staff, Voronin said. The Moldovan president ordered the dismissal of the head of the police directorate general for public order, Colonel Mihai Cebotaru, suspected of hiring a person against 3,000 dollars. Some other dozens of police representatives are also to be dismissed, as being involved in corruption and bribery schemes.

Corruption tarnishes not only the image of the Interior Ministry but also Moldova's image, as many foreign citizens refuse to visit our country because of the illegal taxes applied by national police, Voronin said.

Vladimir Voronin asked the Interior Ministry leadership to take measures to fight corruption and other negative phenomena in the institution's activity, so as to restore the image and prestige of national police in society.
