'Police were a shambolic mess'
Relatives of Jean Charles de Menezes said they found it "unbelievable" that Sir Ian Blair did not know on the day their cousin was shot that he was an innocent man. Demanding action, they branded the Metropolitan police service "not fit for purpose".
The IPCC's report made Assistant Commissioner Andy Hayman's position untenable and revealed that the force was a "shambolic mess", they said.
Solicitor Harriet Wistrich, who represents the family, told a press conference: "If he [Sir Ian] really, really didn't know until the next morning, it raises equally shocking questions about ... Read more

2 Harvey workers charged in se
Two Harvey employees -- a police officer and a detention officer -- have been charged with felonies in separate investigations, officials said Tuesday.
Harvey Police Officer Neal Frundle, a 12-year veteran, was charged Tuesday with official misconduct, felony theft and bribery.
A bond hearing is scheduled for today at the Markham courthouse. A source said Frundle, 41, was accused of stealing money from a suspect he arrested on drug charges. The city received a complaint against Frundle on Friday.
A Harvey detention officer, 21-year-old Ezra Hill, was fired after he was arrested Thursday on a charge of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, said Sandra Alvarado, a spokeswoman for the south suburb.
Hill's car was spotted at the scene of a March 26 shooting in Dolton, said Dolton Police Chief Robert Fox. A loaded 9mm handgun was found in the car, leading to the weapons charge, Fox said.
Police are investigating whether Hill is linked to that shooting, which was in a Dolton park, Fox said.
In the incident, Brandon Cooper, 28, was charged with aggravated battery in the shooting of Stephen Rice near 146th and Evers, court records show.
Cooper is accused of pulling up in a car and arguing with Rice about a fight between Rice's girlfriend and Cooper's sister.
Cooper allegedly chased Rice and shot him. The bullet went through one leg and lodged in another, officials said.
Harvey Mayor Eric Kellogg released a statement Tuesday saying, "I will not tolerate corruption by any employee of the city of Harvey."
In 2006, Harvey detective Hollis Dorrough was charged with official misconduct for allegedly taking a gun from an evidence locker and returning it to the father of Anthony Reynolds, who was charged with pointing the weapon at officers. Dorrough, who was fired, is facing trial.
Reynolds was sentenced last year to 20 years in prison as an armed habitual criminal. He was secretly recorded on a phone call from jail saying "Dorrough sold me the [expletive] gun back."
