The case of an off-duty Des Moines police officer's traffic stop has had a ripple effect in the metro area and across Iowa as police chiefs stress to their officers that if they stop fellow officers driving nearly 100 mph with alcohol on their breath - or for any other wrongdoing - those officers should be treated like any private citizen.

Local police leaders discussed news reports about Stewart Drake, who escaped a ticket and alcohol testing last fall when he was clocked driving 99 mph, during a meeting Thursday. The chiefs came to a consensus that there are two separate issues: off... Read more

Confirmation hearing held for

It is, most agree, a tough time for the New York State Police. Tuesday the Senate Crime Victims, Crime and Corrections Committee confirmed the governor's appointee for Superintendent of the State Police. And with the new appointment, many hope will come restoration of a now soiled State Police reputation.

"The mission before me is basically to restore confidence, not only to the senators and the Assembly, but to the citizens of the State of New York,” said nominee Harry Corbitt.

Before his confirmation, Corbitt fielded questions circling around the attorney general's ongoing investigation into the State Police, which will determine whether a renegade State Police unit has been compiling damaging information on state officials. Examples include the well known Troopergate scandal involving Senate Majority Leader Joe Bruno and others.

"I didn't want to believe it was somebody from the State Police, but there was somebody watching me,” said State Senator Dale Volker.

Confirmation hearing held for Harry Corbitt
In the midst of an investigation by Attorney General Andrew Cuomo into so-called political interference by the New York State Police, the Senate conducted a confirmation hearing Tuesday afternoon for the man widely expected to become the state police's next top cop.

Corbitt said individuals implicated in the investigation are no longer part of the State Police, but he said when he is officially confirmed by the legislature the department's Internal Affairs bureau will immediately do its own investigation focusing on the unit that protects the governor.

"I think the public is interested in whether or not it should occur to allow the governor of the State of New York, who's under protection from the executive security detail to be able to have a prostitute entering his room. Whether or not that's something that should clearly happen under any circumstances when the governor is under your protection," said Senator George Winner of Elmira.

"I don't know that the function of the State Police is to tell the governor what not to do or what to do, but the function of that person would be able, or should be able to report that activity through the chain of command," Corbitt said.

Corbitt said it comes down to ethics and the type of people hired and what he hopes to get across is that this isn't business as usual for the State Police and won't be in the future.

"I see that we had a problem, I don't see that we're going to have a problem in the future. I consider this an aberration in actuality," said Corbitt.

Meanwhile, Corbitt is expected to be confirmed by the full Senate by the end of this week.
