Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan will not allow his men who are guilty of corruption to be let off scot-free.

He said the police will not tolerate attempts by anyone to tarnish the reputation and integrity of the force.

OCPDs are constantly being reminded to take action against those among their men found to be involved in graft, as provided by the law, he added.

In cases where there was insufficient evidence to prosecute those guilty of corruption in court despite them having clearly committed the offence, Musa said he will ensure that the... Read more

Hundreds of complaints against

Hundreds of officers within West Midlands Police are under investigation following complaints from members of the public about their conduct.

A total of 749 cases are currently being handled by the force following 1,293 allegations ranging from serious sexual assault, corruption and harassment to neglect of duty, "incivility" and intolerance.

Nearly all the allegations - 95 per cent of them - were made against police officers.

The actual number of individuals being investigated could be higher because each case may involve more than one officer out of a total of 8,500 within the force.

Assault is the most common complaint with 289 allegations currently under scrutiny. Claims that officers neglected or failed to carry out their duty represented the next highest number of allegations with 219 under investigation.

Incivility, impoliteness and intolerance follow with 213 allegations made, followed by breaches of the police code of practice (105).

Three allegations of sexual assault are being investigated and 49 claims of discriminatory behaviour, which includes racism.

West Midlands Police said it was committed to maintaining the integrity of the force and pledged officers whose behaviour fell short would be dealt with.

A spokeswoman said: "West Midlands Police expects the highest standards of professionalism and integrity of its officers and staff and has robust procedures in place to deal with behaviour which falls outside these standards.

"When complaints are made against police officers and staff we carry out robust, thorough and proportionate investigations to ensure the integrity of the organisation.

"The complaints system covers both police officers and police staff, but 95 per cent of allegations were against police officers."

West Midlands Police stressed the figures related to "open cases" which have not yet been concluded, meaning some of them may eventually not be upheld.

Last year, the force handled 1,744 complaint cases which together contained nearly 3,000 allegations of misbehaviour.

The West Midlands had the third highest number of complaints, behind London Metropolitan and Greater Manchester during 2006/07 according to figures from the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

Of these, more than one in ten (13 per cent) were upheld, above the national average of 11 per cent.

The average profile of a complainant in the West Midlands was white male professional worker aged between 18 and 29.
