Ex-sheriff in upstate gets two
A former sheriff drew a two-year sentence Thursday for trying to pin crimes on critics and retaliating against a deputy in a scandal that rocked the Seneca County sheriff's department in upstate New York.
Leo Connolly, who was convicted in August of two misdemeanor counts of official misconduct, was sentenced to one year on each count and fined $1,000. He was ordered released pending an appeal.
Connolly took a personal leave as sheriff after he was charged in August 2007 and did not seek re-election last fall.

‘No room for corrupt police of
Inspector General (IG) Dr Syed Azhar Hassan Nadeem has directed the investigation officers to ensure professional competency during the investigation process so that criminals could get deterrent punishment from courts.
Addressing an official meeting, he said that refresher courses were being organised for the investigation officers. He said that investigators should adopt modern techniques to get correct information for quick and fair dispensation of justice. “There is no room for inefficient and corrupt police officers in Punjab Police,” he said.
Additional IG (Investigation) Salahuddin Niazi told the meeting that 458 police stations had been inspected across the province and under trial cases were being monitored on daily, weekly and fortnightly basis. The meeting was told that the record of criminals was being computerised.
The IGP directed the investigation officers to visit police stations regularly and check the record. He directed all the circle police officers and station house officer to hold open courts for an hour daily.
Deputy Inspector General (Investigation) Humayun Raza Shafi, Senior Superintendents of Police Dr Masood Saleem, Muhammad Zaman, Akhtar Umer, Superintendent of Police Khalida Khursheed and AIG (vigilance) Qamar Zaman also participated in the meeting.
