Metro police Sgt. William Johnson felt in his bones that a promotion was just around the corner.
A Metro officer since 1996, he served on the police SWAT team, taught at the Metro police academy and even worked as a field-training officer, helping young recruits learn the tricks of the trade.
After scoring ninth among 56 sergeants who took written and oral tests, he figured he was a slam-dunk to win one of the 11 open lieutenant slots.

Police officer in corruption p
A DETECTIVE was arrested at work on suspicion of corruption.
Officers from Greater Manchester Police internal investigation unit arrested Det Sgt Alan Walker at Oldham Police Station. His wife Paula, who works in a civilian role at the station, was also arrested.
Det Sgt Walker, 43, is accused of money laundering, misconduct in a public office, unauthorised taking of a vehicle and data protection offences.
Mrs Walker, 38, was arrested on suspicion of money laundering.
Det Sgt Walker has been suspended from duty while an investigation is carried out.
His wife has been moved to an alternative role within GMP.
Business affairs
The couple have been bailed until May 8 while a probe is carried out. Officers are examining the business affairs of the couple.
They are directors of a sandwich shop just yards from Oldham Police's town centre HQ.
The shop, Calamity Jane's, is authorised by the chief constable.
Any officer within GMP has to declare a second income which is then examined and given the green light. Approval is only ever given from the chief constable.
The Manchester Evening News understands that the allegations centre on laundering money for an extended family member.
Det Sgt Walker has been with the force for about 20-years.
The detective and his wife were unavailable for comment at their detached home in Marsden, west Yorkshire.
If charges were to be made the pair will face legal action.
A GMP spokesman said that the alleged data protection offences did not involve the police's national computer.
