Malaysia: Four police officers

Two police chief inspectors, a police corporal and lance corporal and a customs officer were charged separately with corruption at the sessions court here Monday.

All five men claimed trial for various charges involving intent to accept bribes and demanding and accepting bribes under sections 10(a), 10 (a) (bb) and 11(a) of the Anti-Corruption Act 1997.

In the first case, customs officer Shahrol Affandi Ibrahim was charged with accepting a bribe of RM10,000 from Mazlan Adam as inducement for not seizing washing parts owned by Prosteel (M) Sdn Bhd for which the company had failed to fully pay import duties.

Shahrol, who was then attached with the Customs Department Preventions Division in Padang Besar, is alleged to have committed the offence at 6pm on June 15 along Kilometre 9.6 Jalan Kebun in Klang and is charged under Section 10(a)(b) of the same act.

He is also charged under Section 11(a) of the act with accepting RM2,000 from Abdul Rashid Tengku Shahrani at 7.35pm the same day at a stall in Kampung Seri Gambut, Klang, for the same reason.

Judge Zunaidah Mohd Idris set RM5,000 bail for each offence and set Sept 22 and 23 for trial.

In the second case Fadzil Bon and Shahuri Mohamad Zain, who worked as a corporal and lance corporal respectively with the Kuala Selangor district police CID division, were jointly charged with the intent to accept a bribe of RM2,000 from Thor Lay Chin in order not to take action against him for being in possession of a stolen mobile phone.

The two are alleged to have committed the offence at 7pm on Sept 16, 2005, at the A&K Telecommunication office at Taman Kem, Port Klang. They were charged under Section 10(a) of the same act.

Zunaidah set bail at RM2,500 each and set March 5 for mention.

In the third case, Abdul Aziz Harun, a chief inspector with the Kuala Selangor district police CID division, is alleged to have received a bribe of RM1,000 also from Thor in order not to take action against him for being in possession of a stolen mobile phone.

Abdul Aziz was charged under Section 11(a) of the Anti-Corruption Act 1997 for the offence allegedly committed at about 3.30pm on Sept 19, 2005, at the Kuala Selangor magistrate’s court car park.

Zunaidah set bail at RM3,000 and set March 5 for mention.

Meanwhile at a separate proceeding, police chief inspector Ahmad Rambli, 37, claimed trial to two charges of accepting bribes of RM5,000 and RM3,000 each from K. Thiagu.

On the first charge under Section 10(a)(bb), of the Anti-Corruption Act 1997, Ahmad, who was attached with the Klang district police Anti-Narcotics Division as an investigating officer, is said to have demanded RM5,000 from Thiagu to reduce the reported weight of the heroine seized and to reduce the detention period for Thiagu’s brother, Vimaraj, who was still being investigated.

On the second charge under Section 11(1) of the same act, Ahmad is alleged to have agreed to accept RM3,000 from Thiagu for the same reason.

He is alleged to have committed the first offence at the Klang district police Anti-Narcotics Department at about 7pm on Feb 20 last year while the second offence is alleged to have been committed at about 11.30pm the same day at Restoran Al-Bidayah along Jalan Sarawak, Taman Seri Andalas here.

Ahmad, who was unrepresented, told the court that he would not be hiring a lawyer to represent him and would fight his own case.

Zunaidah set bail RM6,000 with one surety for both offences and set March 4 for mention.
