SIX officers have left Humberside Police since the launch of an anti-corruption inquiry 10 months ago.
More than 30 officers have been investigated by the force's newly-formed anti-corruption unit; there have been three dismissals and three resignations.

Inquiries gathered more than 200 "pieces of intelligence" relating to 155 personnel, leading to detailed investigations into 32 individuals.

The investigation, launched in September last year, has led to another officer being called to a police tribunal, although the case has yet to be heard.

Israel: Police settling score

The Movement for Quality Government in Israel yesterday threatened to petition the High Court of Justice to act against police chief David Cohen if he removes Superintendent Ephraim Erlich from his post as chief of the traffic police's central unit. Yesterday Erlich was told he would be appointed deputy of the police's Hebron District.

Eliad Shraga, one of the movement's leaders, said the police's top brass was settling scores with Erlich for exposing in 2005 ties between police officers and reputed crime brothers Sharon and Oded Parinyan.

Frustrated by what he claims was an internal cover-up, Erlich told journalist Ilana Dayan about the police-mob connections. Based on his testimony, she reported that the police covered up the 1999 murder of criminal Pinchas Buchbut by a uniformed policeman, allegedly ordered by the Parinyan brothers. At the time of the killing, Buchbut was under police guard at a hospital.

"It's amazing to see how the system goes about settling scores with this whistle-blower, who exposed corruption," Shraga said. "I regret to say that ever since Erlich exposed the Parinyan affair, his superior officers have been going to considerable lengths to make difficulties ... Not only is he not getting promoted, but now he is about to be exiled to Hebron."

The Israel Police spokesperson confirmed that Erlich is to be posted to Hebron: "Since it was decided not to promote Erlich for the time being, and since he has already completed three years at the traffic police, it was decided to appoint Erlich to another position, which is equal in prominence to his current one."
