Madison officer is fired for m

The Madison Police and Fire Commission has fired a police officer who received nearly $250,000 in salary and benefits while on paid leave for more than three years.

The commission says Michael Grogan committed significant violations of departmental policy and firing him is the appropriate penalty.

Grogan pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct for an off-duty incident in December 2004 in which he crashed his car in Waukesha County, kicked in the door of a stranger's home and then fell asleep on the floor.

Grogan was suspended with pay shortly after the incident. He had been with the Madison force since 2000.

Grogan, 47, can appeal the firing in circuit court but it means he will no longer be paid.
