Macedonia: Police abuse cases
A total of 51 cases of police abuse of power were registered in 2007, says the legal analysis due to be presented in Skopje on Thursday.
The analysis stresses cases of spectacular arrests and non-respect of innocence presumption, as well as a number of cases of misconduct by members of the special police unit Alphas.
As many as 90 percent of the reported victims of misconduct by Alphas sustained physical injuries, the analysis said.
Civic associations that were included in the project in 2007 filed 49 complaints to the Interior Ministry's Internal Control Division.
The number of police abuse victims seeking assistance from civic associations is high, but they did not report the cases fearing about their safety.
The Executive Director of Foundation Open Society Institute - Macedonia (FOSIM), Vladimir Milcin, and the Judicial Reform Programme Director within the OSCE's Rule of Law Unit, Donald Bisson, will make address at the presentation of the document.
