Dishonest officers sacked
TWO DETECTIVES have been booted out of the police force in disgrace after being found guilty of stealing confiscated cash following a 39-day police disciplinary hearing – and a £1m investigation that lasted three years.
A third – a sergeant with 20 years’ experience – who allowed a prisoner to admit to an offence he could not have committed in order to massage detection figures has kept his job but was busted down to the ranks after he was proved to have failed to act with honesty and integrity. Police worker admits misconduc
A POLICE worker who failed to carry out proper cell checks on a prisoner hours before he died has admitted misconduct.
Ian Green, 60, was on duty at Chingford police station when Robert Kavarz, a Polish national, collapsed shortly before he was due to appear in court on a charge of domestic assault in July, 2005.
He was taken to Whipps Cross University Hospital, but later died of ethanol poisoning.
Southwark Crown Court heard on Monday that Green, of Hawkwood Crescent, Chingford, failed to carry out proper custody checks on some prisoners and relied on CCTV rather than going into the cells.
Of the 125 checks logged in the records, 85 were found to be incorrect.
Green, a retired custody sergeant who had returned to work as a civilian detention officer, was suspended from duty and charged with misconduct following an investigation by the Independent Police Complaints Commission.
He was granted bail after admitting the charge and is due to sentenced on February 8.
