Suspended Officer Charged Anew

A police officer already in trouble with the law faces new charges that he tried to stop witnesses from cooperating with an internal investigation into police misconduct.

Bernard Durgin, 39, on unpaid suspension from the force, will appear in New Haven Superior Court next week on charges of witness tampering and intimidation. Police have already charged Durgin with workers' compensation fraud and allegedly using police computers to track down information on his ex-wife and other women.

A seven-year veteran of the department, Durgin has been suspended since August following an unusual confrontation with New Haven police outside of a Temple Street bar — on a night Durgin had supposedly called in sick.

That night, Durgin tried to stop police from arresting his friend, a convicted felon and motorcycle gang member, by flashing his Madison police badge. Arousing further suspicion, Durgin was wearing the colors of the "Poor Boyz," the East Haven motorcycle gang he co-founded.

Madison police opened an investigation. As they began interviewing witnesses, police encountered two acquaintances of Durgin's — a childhood friend and an ex-girlfriend — who claimed they had been threatened against sharing information with police, according to Durgin's most recent arrest warrant.

Albert LeClaire, a longtime friend, told police he was warned to "watch himself," according to the warrant.

An ex-girlfriend, whose name was not released, claimed she was pressured to stay quiet. On one occasion, Durgin grabbed her arm at a bar and said, "Whatever you say is going to come out," according to the warrant.

The judge has signed a restraining order barring Durgin, who lives in East Haven, from contacting the woman. He is currently free on $150,000 bail.
