Colchester Police Probe

Colchester officials say it will take another week to complete the internal investigation into allegations of possible police misconduct. The issue is whether a Colchester officer gave special treatment to an off-duty Burlington cop pulled over for suspected drunk driving.

"As of last Friday, we had hoped, the police department had hoped, to wrap up its investigation," says Colchester Town Manager Al Voegele.

Voegele says the town's internal investigation into possible police misconduct has been delayed because of new leads discovered six days ago.

"So this week we've recently been in a holding position trying to get those new leads to talk to us," explains Voegele.

Colchester authorities want to know if the new leads can shed more light on the November 2 incident that started at the local Burger King. Two off-duty state troopers saw a motorist drive over a curb as he left the restaurant. They called 9-1-1 suspecting he was drunk. Minutes later, a still unidentified Colchester cop stopped the suspected DWI motorist, who was an off-duty Burlington police sergeant. He did not process him for DWI.

The off-duty sergeant was 24-year veteran Don Lilja who last week resigned, apologized, and admitted he drove after drinking and the Colchester officer did not process him for DWI. Burlington's Police Chief announced Lilja's resignation in a press release. But Colchester Police have not yet publicly released any details about the incident.

Al Voegele says he is not concerned that some citizens have questioned the slow pace of the internal investigation.

"No, I'm not concerned because my job is to make sure that we do a competent and an excellent job and that we leave no stone unturned. I know there's pressure. People calling on me and other members of the Selectboard. However, I have to do what is reasonable, what I'm responsible for doing."

The town manager says he hopes to be able to publicly discuss the findings of that investigation next Friday.
