Two Chesnee Police Officers Ar
Two local police officers took an unwanted trip to jail earlier this evening after being busted by the State Law Enforcement Division on multiple charges.
Jeff Kirby, the former Chesnee Interim Police Chief, and Thomas Carey each appeared before a judge late Friday night for a bond hearing after they were arrested on one count each of Misconduct In Office, while Carey was also charged with third-degree Criminal Exploitation of A Minor.
"I was sad to see two police officers arrested," said Chesnee Police Chief Scott Smith. "They should be held to no less standard than the public. If they broke the law, they need to go to jail."
The SLED investigation into misconduct at the Chesnee Police Department comes amidst a long series of events that left the department in turmoil.
Kirby allegedly unlawfully brass knuckles from the custody of the Chesnee Police Department and returned them to a man who had been convicted of an assault with them.
Carey allegedly gave a rifle to a friend who allegedly impersonated a police officer, made an unlawful traffic stop and handcuffed a woman. SLED also seized a computer in which they say Casey used and allegedly discovered sexual images of a graphic nature involving minors.
Kirby and Carey each declined comment at their bond hearing. Carey's bond was set at $100,000, while Kirby's was set at $25,000.
Meanwhile, Smith is excited that is behind his department so they can move on toward the future.
"I'm excited that got done," he said. "All I can do is look forward to the future, take this and turn it around. And we've got to build from this point forward."
Presently, the Chesnee Police office has only four officers on staff
