Onalaska mayor backs police ch
Onalaska Mayor Jim Bialecki publically voiced his support Wednesday for Police Chief Randy Williams, a day after a special prosecutor declined to seek charges against the chief in a witness-tampering complaint filed by his officers.

At a press conference Wednesday morning, Bialecki praised the outcome and said Williams will remain with the city despite the continuing disputes in the department.

“I am very pleased Chief Williams has been completely exonerated of any and all allegations of wrongdoing,” Bialecki said.

Mickelberg case prompts call f

A criminologist has called for Western Australia Police Commissioner Karl O'Callaghan to have more powers to deal with under-performing senior officers.

The call by criminologist David Indermaur comes after a public apology by Commissioner O'Callaghan to the Mickelberg brothers yesterday and a number of other problems with high-profile cases this year.

Mr Indermaur says many of the problem cases have been from the 90s and earlier.

He says there should be a review of the WA Police Service.

"I think we need to strengthen the hand of the Commissioner to be able to make the changes that are necessary to actually achieve a modern, professional police force," he said.

"That means being able to hold his officers accountable for their performance and being able to move police officers that are under-performing."

He says there needs to be generational renewal, particularly in regards to some senior police.

"Unfortunately we don't have, yet, the ability to remove police who are not performing as well as they should be," he said.

"There's a very powerful police union that will oppose any moves to move police who are under-peforming."
